Article to Read: Moving Past Gender Barriers to Negotiate a Raise
In this article, The New York Times gives tips how to negotiate for a raise as women and that we should do it differently than men do.
Here are some strategies on how to approach negotiations at work:
Groundwork: Preparation before the you go to the table is 70% of the work. Keep a record of all the positive feedback you received over time.
Fact-Finding: Know what to ask for. Talk to a recruiter, even if you don't want to move. Also talk to men, as there're more willing to open up about numbers.
Specific Language: Frame questions from your employer’s perspective. Think about something from your perspective, but use we in your pitch.
Negotiate in Person: negotiating per e-mail can come off wrong and you have to wait for your answer while negotiating in person is a two way conversation.
Outside Offers: If you want to come with an outside offer as a tactic, watch your language. It might be seen as a threat.
Role-Playing: Practice what you want to say and how you want to say it with a friend. It also helps to get into someone else’s perspective.
