First Day Back to Work

Today was my first day back to work and I must say, it was tough. I wore a new black dress and heels. Wearing a great outfit sure does help. In the morning I walked in the office and there was only one other person at my department. I like starting early so that I'll have a quiet start. When I saw my desk full of mail and my inbox full with thick black letters, I felt a bit overwhelmed.

Here's hot to get through the first day back to the grind:

  • Have breakfast. I didn't start my breakfast until 9:30, big mistake.
  • It's OK to have some small talk with your colleagues and wish everyone a Happy New Year. After a two week holiday I needed to settle down for a few minutes and this helped.
  • Go through your e-mail one by one. First I scanned by inbox. A few emails were to wish people a Merry Christmas or HNY, so those were dated. Are there lots of emails being marked as high? Check some of them first. Scanning the subjects helps a lot. Sometimes I read an e-mail and if I can't take action immediately, I close and select as not read so I can look into it later.
  • Start from the bottom and work your way to the newest e-mail. But, e-mails received this morning or while at work, are worth reading along the go.
  • Take your calls. I received calls early in the morning and I had to think really hard to recover what the subject is about. I'm lucky that I have a good business relationship with many of the people I deal with on a daily basis that aren't my coworkers. It were the holidays, they will understand that you have to look through your emails first before you have an answer ready.
  • When I worked through my emails and marked them as unread or categorized them, I make a little plan and go from there.
  • Breathe. You're not much of use if you're totally stressful the very first days after your holiday. A call, an email, a meeting, everything can interrupt your plan. Don't worry and relax. Sometimes I have to remind myself to take a little break and have a cup of tea.
